She can kill with a kiss. But can assassin Tyree also heal one man’s grief, and bring peace to a galaxy threatened by war?
For Tyree of the Su, being an assassin isn’t simply something she was trained for. It’s the sole reason for her existence. A genetically enhanced clone—one of many in Refuge—she’s about to learn her secluded lifestyle, and that of all her kind, is under threat by a race capable of neutralizing their special talents to leave them defenseless.
For Zander D’joren, being a diplomat has not only cost him his appearance, but also the love of his life. Scarred, grieving, he must nonetheless continue in his role as co-delegate to the fearsome Tier-vane or risk a conflict that could only end one way.
Now both of them need to keep each other alive and maintain a perilous deception long enough to renegotiate the treaty with the Tier-vane, or throw their people into a war that could wipe out Terrans and Inc-Su alike. But there’s more at stake than humanity, whether true or modified. Can the love growing between them save them both? Or merely hasten their destruction?
A science fiction romance novella, coming from Breathless Press 25th July 2014.
“Are you ready?” she asked.
Zander spread his hands in an open gesture to say that he was.
So why is he just standing there like a defunct Manikin instead of poised to fight?
Tyree took her combat position and Zander matched her, just as the Manikin had done. She’d never fought a human in combat practice before. This should be interesting.
She sprang forward and aimed two rapid punches at his face. Zander evaded both with a speed and grace totally out of proportion to his bulk. Her third he blocked with little effort, and she stepped back to reassess her strategy. But only for an instant.
A quick step forward and she lashed upward with her foot, snapping his head back. Zander staggered but didn’t fall. Her second kick failed as he grabbed her ankle and jerked her off balance. She twisted as she dropped and caught him hard in the knee. Zander collapsed. Both rolled aside, and then jumped up to face each other again.
Not bad.
Tyree bit back a laugh as they exchanged blows, each faster than the last. Zander blocked or evaded most, but not all. His skill almost matched hers, yet his defenses were just a fraction too slow. Each move she made tested his reach, his reflexes and his stamina until she could sense him struggling a little.
Time for the kill.
She floored him with a kick to the chest, the full weight of her augmented density behind it, but as she moved in to finish the fight he dove into her. Tyree landed on her back hard enough to drive the breath from her lungs.
Zander had her pinned to the ground. She bucked but couldn’t shift him. The triumphant smile on his face sent rage blazing through her gut. With hardly a whisper, she Misted out and went through him. Golden warmth filled her for a second before she pulled free. Zander pushed to his feet and spun to meet her, but she cranked up her molecular density and punched him hard in the chest. He collapsed, gasping and coughing. In one fluid movement she sat astride him at full density, and the air whumphed out of his lungs. She pinioned his arms with her hands, her face hovering mere centimeters above his.
As her breathing slowed to normal, a huge grin split her face. She’d made a vow to herself to jump him, and she’d done it. Perhaps it was childish, but it warmed her heart.
“Your…reputation…is well deserved,” he gasped.
“You’re not so bad yourself,” she complimented him. He’d fought well, but perhaps not quite with the determination—and certainly not the desperation—of most opponents she’d faced. “For a human.”
“Thank you. Perhaps we could try this again tomorrow?”
Tyree laughed. As much as he could irritate the hell out of her, he was equally amusing. “If you want to spend most of your morning on the floor…”
He gazed up at her with that easy smile, making no effort to struggle. Most humans, without the influence of her pheromones and the distraction of her naked body writhing above theirs, would not have been so trusting. So compliant. She found herself staring at his mouth. What would it be like to kiss him, without the use of her talents? Would it be as satisfying? As sensual? The warmth of him, the firmness of his body beneath hers, sent heat spiraling through her abdomen.
“Perhaps you could let me up now?” His words jerked her from such musings. What the hell was she thinking?

In honor of Haven’s 1-year Book Birthday, here’s Carina’s encounter with Jonas, her (cranky, alpha, protective, tortured badass) mentor.
… So many wrong things were happening all at once, what was one more? Tough thoughts, but I still jumped when a pale hand snaked out of the shadows and slid onto Adrian’s shoulder.
~ * ~
The darkness itself solidified into a pale, young man with straight black hair pulled back in a tight ponytail. Dressed in black, he looked about my height and age, though my gut said much older. And undead. A small gold ankh dangled from a gold chain around his neck. Delicately boned for a man, I nonetheless sensed the power in his slight body.

HAVEN, an Urban Fantasy RomanceIn keeping with the romantic theme of our hop, here’s a romantic snippet from my novel HAVEN — Book 1 in The Tranquilli Bloodline Series — featuring Carina, a feisty San Francisco club owner, and her love-interest, undead musician Alexander.
Outside, the misty air cooled my lungs, the marble bench froze my ass, and the concrete under my bare feet chilled them bone deep. All cleared my head and eased the vertigo. “What time is it?”
Alexander draped his black leather coat over my shoulders. “Around four.” He helped me snake my arms into the coat’s too-long-for-me sleeves, his hands pale like moonlight against the inky darkness of his coat. Such large, competent hands, the fingers long and strong. Piano player fingers. A silver band graced his left index, an onyx triquetra adorning the middle. He fished my hand from the sleeve. When our palms touched, power pulsed, warm and comforting. My eyes strayed to the bracelets on his wrist. One thin strap of black leather and a chunky, metal bracelet of I-shaped links. I traced the metal with my free hand. “Silver?” “Never.” He pointed at the rings. “White gold.” And the bracelet. “Titanium.” “Oh.” My fingers continued their dance over his accessories. Love touching him. Wind gusted around the clinic, whipping locks of hair across my face. He brushed them away, tucking some behind my ear. I pressed my cheek against his palm and closed my eyes to savor the moment. “Feeling better?” I blinked and gave him a wry grin. “A lot better since you interrupted my undead uncles getting me drunk on brandy.” His lips quirked, fangs flashing. My insides quivered. “Yeah, much better.” My fingertips stroked his handsome face. His skin showed no signs of the wounds he’d received during the earlier fight. Impressive. He leaned into my touch. My eyes zeroed in on his oh-so kissable lips. He moved closer, closer still, pausing a hair’s breadth away. My pulse skyrocketed. My stomach performed endless somersaults while bits lower clenched in anticipation. Do it. Do it now. Alexander let out a breath and kissed me. |

Hi Everyone! It’s vampire time! Happy Release day to my writer pal and Paranormal Unbound co-blogger, Elisabeth Staab!
She wants out
Party girl Alexia Blackburn is only hanging around the vampire compound until her best friend—the queen—has her baby. After that, nothing is going to stop Alexia from getting back to daylight, safety, and feeling like a normal human being. But leaving the vampire world has one big catch…
He needs her to stay
Head of vampire security Lee Goram has hated and distrusted humans for centuries. Feeding on vampire blood has kept him strong…but now it’s killing him—and he’s horrified to discover that Alexia may hold the key to his cure. He’d rather die defending his king than admit his weakness, but time is running out for the great vampire warrior…
Elisabeth Staab still lives with her nose in a book and at least one foot in an imaginary world. She believes that all kinds of safe and sane love should be celebrated but she adores the fantasy-filled realm of paranormal romance the best. She lives in the Washington DC area with her family and one big scaredy cat, where she loves to spend time with good friends, go dancing, collect wacky coffee mugs from which to drink her favorite beverage, and sing off-key in her kitchen (when she isn’t making characters fall in love, that is).
What if you were the key to an ancient prophecy that would begin to heal your lands, but fulfilling your destiny meant you had to turn your back on everything you’d been taught to believe in?
Redlynn of Volkzene, member of the Sisterhood of Red, is heartbroken to discover another girl kidnapped and her best friend slain by werewolves. Defying the head of her order, she sets out to kill the beast she believes responsible. The King of the Weres– But there are worse things in Wolvenglen Forest than the wolves.
Adrian, reluctant heir to the throne of Wolvenglen, and his band of wolf brothers are bound to protect the humans; especially the Sisterhood. Finding Redlynn unconscious in his woods, awakens in him a passion he’s never before experienced and a protective instinct that has him ready to turn on his own men. Problem is, a female is the last thing Adrian needs complicating his life.
But all is not as it seems in Wolvenglen Forest and to save the missing girls before time runs out, Redlynn and Adrian must move past their inner demons and learn to trust each other. In the search for vengeance however, sometimes you must give up what you desire most.
Red The Were Hunter won 2nd Place in the Hook, Line and Sinker Contest and is a current finalist in the Great Beginnings Contest.
Each step sapped Redlynn of her strength, but she refused to let it show. Her body felt like a rope twisted too tight. Each movement stiff and painful. Slower than she wanted to, she made her way to the bathroom. Stepping up and through the threshold, steam from the water moistened her face. It’d been a long time since she’d felt a hot bath. And she’d never seen a tub in a room of its own before. Breathing in the perfumed water, she relaxed.

Redlynn turned to find Adrian watching. Hanna slid into the room behind her, and closed the heavy door.
“Let me help you out of your clothes, dear.”
Redlynn opened her mouth, but Hanna raised her hand.
“Stop right there. You want to be brave for Adrian, wonderful, but not with me. You’re hurting, and you have nothing to prove to me. I already know how strong you are. Let me help you.”
I like her.
Without waiting for an answer, Hanna undressed Redlynn and eased her into the tub. She couldn’t hold in the sigh that escaped her lips at the warmth of the water.
Hanna reached into her pouch, pulled out a canister, stepped up to the tub and knelt on the floor. “Let me help cleanse the area of the bite.”
Redlynn nodded and leaned to the right. The stretching of her neck pained her shoulder and collarbone. Redlynn winced and bit her lip.
Hanna hummed, gently working the soap into the wound. The tune was familiar but Redlynn couldn’t place it. “What is that you are humming?”
“An old lullaby my mother used to sing to me. Do you have a family, Red?”
Redlynn swallowed hard. “Not anymore. My father was driven off by a Were when I was young. It broke my mother’s heart. She missed my father every day. She died a few years ago, and the only other person I called family died two nights ago. Killed by the Weres that I was in the process of eradicating when I was brought here.”
“How do you know it was Weres?” Hanna asked.
“The Head of my Order confirmed seeing them.”
“Hmmm,” Hanna mused, rubbing the soap down Redlynn’s arms.
“What?”
“Oh, it’s probably nothing, but I was just thinking. How would wolves grab a girl and carry her away?”
Redlynn’s mind raced. It’d always been the Weres that’d taken the girls, or so they’d been told. But Hanna was right, how’d Weres get the girls out?
A knock pulled her from her thoughts. “Is everything okay in there?”
“We’re fine,” Hanna called. “But we need some towels.”
“Of course,” said Adrian.
Hanna looked at Redlynn and smiled. “He’s a good man. He’s tough, and scared to let anyone in, but a good man.”
“You know him well?”
Hannah nodded. “We all know each other well enough here. But, they’re all good men.” Hanna stood and put the soap away.
“All?”
“Yes, most of his subjects are men. There are about fifty of them here right now.”
“No women?”
“There are a few of us here. But let’s be honest,” Hanna laughed. “The forest isn’t the kind of place most women want to live in.”
It was true. Redlynn loved the woods. She always had. But she couldn’t imagine many people did. “Why don’t the men leave?”

“This is their home. They know nothing else.”
There was another knock. Hanna slid the door open slightly and Adrian passed the towels through the gap to her. Hanna held up the towel like a shield and averted her eyes. Redlynn grasped the right side of the tub with her good hand and got her feet underneath herself. She tried to stand but the tub was slick with soapy water and she slipped, crying out.
“I can’t get up,” she grunted.
“Here, let me help.” Hanna dropped the towel and wrapped her arm around Redlynn’s waist. She tried to lift Redlynn, but Redlynn cried out again.
This time the knock was loud. “What’s going on?”
“I can’t take her out,” Hanna called.
The door swung inward and Adrian stood at Redlynn’s back. She hunched over, letting her hair cover her body. Adrian bent down into the water to draw her up, but she pushed him away. Her body flushed with heat.
“I’m naked.”
He took a deep breath and turned away. “I’ll close my eyes.”
“You can still feel me, can’t you?”
Redlynn let out an indignant ‘Hey,’ as he bent down a second time and lifted her.
She protested and slipped in his grip.
“Don’t do that, or we’ll both go down,” he commanded.
Redlynn swallowed and put her good arm around his neck for support. Their eyes met and she licked her lips involuntarily. His hard muscles flexed around her and her thighs warmed, even though the air chilled her skin. Walking out of the bathing room, Adrian sat her on the end of the bed and turned away.

Hello Dear Readers!
It’s release day for Laura Kaye’s EAST OF ECSTASY, the final book in the Hearts of the Anemoi Series. See below for a note from Laura and read an excerpt!
By Laura Kaye
You guys! I can’t believe release day for East of Ecstasy is finally here! This is the final book in my Hearts of the Anemoi series, which includes: North of Need, West of Want, and South of Surrender.
The Anemoi were wind gods the Greek associated with controlling the wind, weather, and seasons. In East of Ecstasy, hero Devlin Eston is the heir to the East Wind which has long been associated with unluckiness, misfortune, and, thanks to Devlin’s father, even evil. Devlin himself has been the victim of his father’s evil, and thereby finds himself an outcast among his own divine family. In this scene, heroine Annalise Fallston — who gets visions that she’s forced to paint in order to quiet them in her mind — sees Devlin for the first time.
Forcing the chaos in her mind away, Anna dipped her brush into the gray and stepped to the canvas. Motion captured her attention from the corner of her eye.
The Dark Man, the subject of her recent paintings, stood in the doorway and leaned against the jamb.
Anna jumped and her pulse raced, but this time, anger flooded in instead of fear. “I will deal with you on my own damn terms,” she said, taking a perverse amount of pleasure from putting a figment of her imagination in its place. Because that’s all he was.
He didn’t move or speak. Not that he could, since, you know. Figment.Of.Imagination.
Anna rolled her eyes, done with being scared and so pissed to have to do this again that she was nearly out of her mind. “I’m doing your damn painting already. So just leave me alone.” She cut her gaze back to the expanse of white, but the desire to see if his image would still be there if she looked again drove her to distraction.
Finally, she gave in and…he was still there.
Completely still.Blatantly scowling.Totally unfathomable.
Was this a vision? Another image she’d have to paint?
Her heart tripped into a sprint, and she couldn’t look away from him. Like the compulsion that forced her to paint these images, Anna couldn’t help but return his stare and memorize his masculine features. The sharp angles of his face, the harsh set of his mouth, the dark shadows around his even darker eyes.Black eyes. Blades of black hair hung low over his forehead and just touched the hooded shirt he wore under his short, scuffed leather jacket. He’d crossed his arms over his chest, and the position caused his biceps to bunch up under the worn leather. In fact, everything about him appeared worn—the coat, the threadbare jeans, the scuffed boots. None of it struck her as the kind of shabby chic you could buy in some upscale store for a small fortune, either. The whole effect was rough. Dangerous.Deprived.
Deprived? What a strange way of describing him. But as Anna’s gaze swept over him again, the thought stuck. For his height, he seemed thin, with his lean hips, clad in old black jeans, a trim waist, and pronounced cheekbones. Her fingers twitched around the nearly forgotten paintbrush. What would it feel like to cup that harsh face in her hand?
Anna gasped and tore her gaze away. She had to blink to pull herself out of the haze of thoughts. Frustration surged through her and tensed the muscles of her shoulders and neck. She didn’t want to be working on another of these paintings as it was, so the last thing she needed was to lose a bunch of time daydreaming. Or would it be daynightmaring?
As she stared at the blank canvas, the image of the shackled man behind the prison bars filled her mind’s eye.
Definitely the latter.
Curiosity pulled her eyes to the left again. The doorway was empty.
(end excerpt)
So, did you have a favorite line from the excerpt? Thanks for reading!
Laura
The final chapter in the award-winning and bestselling Hearts of the Anemoi series…
She’s the only one who can give him the strength to save them all…
Annalise Fallston made peace with postponing her big-city dreams to care for her ill father, but lately she’s been filled with a restlessness not even her beloved painting dispels. Worse, the colors don’t speak to her as they always have, and all her efforts produce dark, foreboding images of a dangerous man and a terrifying future.
Devlin Eston, black-souled son of the evil Anemoi Eurus, is the only one who can thwart his father’s plan to overthrow the Supreme God of Wind and Storms. But first, Dev must master the unstable powers he’s been given. Distrusted and shunned by his own divine family, he never expected to find kindness and passion in the arms of a mortal.
But Devlin’s love puts Annalise in the path of a catastrophic storm, and in the final Armageddon showdown between the Anemoi and Eurus, sacrifices will be made, hearts broken, and lives changed forever…or lost.

My feisty heroine from HAVEN joins me on the hop today, interviewing me on the romance topic.
Okay, Carina, I’m all yours. And thanks for taking the reins here.
No Problem, Celia. I’ll keep it simple. For now. What’s your favorite romance?
Good question. And oh, there’s so much romance goodness out there. As you know from your own romantic experiences starring in Haven, I love urban fantasy (UF) with a strong romantic component. And I adore paranormal romance (PNR). I write and read both. I also enjoy a good Highlander Romance. Contemporary, too.
That’s great, Celia. And thanks for Alexander. He’s undead Awesome Sauce. Now, give us some specific reading recs, per favore.
My pleasure, Carina. Or rather, yours, re: Alexander *ahem*… 😉
Paranormal recommendations: Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark, J. R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood, Karen Marie Moning’s Highlander Series, Amber Belldene’s Blood Vine series, and Laura Kaye’s Hearts of Anemoi series.
Grazie for the reading recs. Now tell us, why do you like reading romances?
I like stories with a Happily Ever After (HEA), or at the very least a Happily For Now (HFN). Romances give me that, and more.
Fair enough. Do you have any fun/embarrassing stories from WRITING that sweaty scene? I just bet you do.
And you’d win that bet! One evening, while I was working on a paranormal romance featuring a merman-human hybrid — and writing a steamy bathroom scene between my hot hero and his human heroine — my husband peered over my shoulder and said,
“Your brain scares me.” [Pause.] “I wish I could unsee that.”
Best. Compliments. Ever. LOL 🙂
If I had a dollar for every time someone said “you scare me…” (Carina shakes her head) but I digress. Okay, Celia, almost done with the interrogation, I mean, interview. Do you have a favorite sexy scene
Oh man, there are so many awesome sexy scenes in so many delightful romances, how can I possibly pick just one?
Hm… Okay, sheesh don’t give me the evil eye!
Here: Laura Kaye’s *awesome* contemporary romance Hearts In Darkness features a man and a woman trapped in an elevator in the dark. Their interactions in the darkness are so, so good. Read my review for more info.
Va bene, Celia. Last question: Do you have romances to share?
Yes. Let’s share yours, Carina.
Short blurb: San Francisco nightclub owner Carina Tranquilli discovers latent powers and makes peace with her vampire family, destiny and soul mate, with Team Evil in hot pursuit.
Here’s a romance snippet:
Alexander crushed his lips to mine. Need roared through me and my hands burrowed into his thick, silky hair, holding his head as if he might try to escape. He growled his approval against my lips, his kiss growing more insistent. He tasted metallic, like the blood he’d consumed. Again, I found I liked the taste…

And don’t miss the other Hard Ink books, now available:
Hey guys! I am so excited about Easy’s book that I can hardly wait for August to get here! Easy’s character was a total surprise to me. When I initially plotted out the series, there were four surviving members of the Army Special Forces team and therefore I planned for and sold four book in the series. But then, when I sat down to write Hard As It Gets, all of a sudden the story demanded there were actually five guys, and Edward “Easy” Cantrell was born. And I’m so glad! Because Easy’s character is a totally tortured hero, which I adore writing! So I’m super happy that we added his story and this novella into the series, and I can’t wait for you to learn about Easy in Hard to Hold On To!
Is it August yet???
