Aimee looked at me, and her face cracked, revealing a sliver of raw pain. Then she rearranged her lips, blinked, and smiled. The crack was gone, but too late—I’d already seen.

I had my arms around her shoulders, yanking her into my chest as fast as I had pounced on Luis before. Her brown hair was silk under my palm, but she only allowed one stroke before she squirmed away.

“Whoa, big boy,” she said, punching me playfully in the arm, “it’s Luis who wants your pettin’.” She dropped down on the couch where Luis had sat earlier, and took a swig of his beer.

“Hey, chiquita, that’s mine,” Luis said, pointing at the bottle.

He gave her a quick peck, like always. Finely shaped brown lips brushed across her rosebud of a mouth. Time slowed down. Blood pounded in my ears. So not good.

She tipped the bottle up and, wrapping her red lips around its rim, finished the beer. “Don’t you worry, sweetheart,” she said to him, “Dan’ll get us a couple more.” She looked up at me and let her eyes go all big and round.

Brat. She liked to play this bossing game with me, as if I were her eager to please older brother…
