The Writer’s Path

Every writer’s path to publication is different, but each one is laced with ups and downs. It’s simply another aspect of our lives. We can’t have the good without the bad. It’s how you deal with the roadblocks and negative aspects that count. My journey has had me in tears and jumping for joy but the one thing I have never regretted was opening my first word file and typing.

I started writing in fall of 2011 but stopped for several months after a contest judge told me my story was so bad she couldn’t even finish my entry. Then, she kindly suggested I give some serious thought to whether I wanted to write and to not waste people’s time on trash. I was devastated. So, I did. I thought and I studied…and I realized the judge who’d ripped my work to shreds was right. When I sat back down to write, I had a better handle on the craft and a better outlook on life.

The day I got an email from the next contest I entered made all the tears and hard work worth it. I finaled in the paranormal category! A week later, I learned I won another that ended up with a contract offer. Soon after that, I got the ‘call’ from Ellora’s Cave. I didn’t stop dancing for days.
