The Reluctant Hero
An interview with Brody Parker of DEADLY, CALM, AND COLD
by Susannah Sandlin

So, here I am, driving down the wrong side of the road in rural England (not intentionally but this whole left-side driving thing freaks me out). I’m heading northwest into Lincolnshire after a short pit stop in the town of Kings Lynn. The terrain has flattened out as I skirt the marshy area in East Midlands known as The Wash.

Finally, after what seems like a forever of foggy, damp grayness, I reach the village of Swineshead. I spot the grand St. Mary’s Church, which dates back to the fourteenth century, and a small art gallery where the guy I’m here to meet has some paintings on display.

After a near head-on collision that would’ve been entirely my fault, I spot the Black Dragon, a pub where Brody Parker agreed to meet me. He thinks we’re going to talk about his art, but I’m more interested in the rumors I’ve heard about his involvement in a treasure hunt.

The pub is rather dark, but it’s pretty empty in mid-afternoon, and I easily spot Brody sitting in a corner. He’s tall and broad-shouldered, with dark tousled hair and an almost shy look in eyes so dark they look black from across the room. There is paint on the back of his hands—looks like gray and blue.

So, Brody, tell me how an American artist ended up living in this little corner of England?
Brody (fidgets): “That’s a long story. I thought we were here to talk about the new exhibit in London.”

People want to know about the artist, not just the art. Brody: “A long-lost uncle I’d never even heard of died and I was his only surviving relative, so I inherited a cottage outside Swineshead. Most of the paintings in the new exhibit were done in and around the fens, or swamps, near The Wash. I wanted to capture the moody, almost haunted feel of the place this time of year.”

Maybe it’s haunted by the ghost of all of those people who died when King John’s baggage train got sucked in by quicksand. That’s when he lost the crown jewels, right?
Brody: “Well, that was before my time. (Laughs—it was in 1216 A.D.) But there are those around here who think there was a more sinister plot to poison the king and steal the crown jewels. He spent the night here in Swineshead the same day the jewels disappeared, and he died a few days later. We’ll never know.”

But I heard you were looking for the jewels. Maybe even that the cottage you live in was part of the original abbey where they might have been hidden
Brody, frowning and stiffening up: “Who told you that? That’s ridiculous.”

Oh, sorry, guess I was mistaken. So about the art—what is it you love about painting in this area? You work mostly in acrylic, right?
Brody: “Right. It’s the quality of the light in this particular area, especially in spring around Swineshead. The color of green in the fields is almost luminous. In the winter, the fens are more interesting because of the fog and the shades of gray.”

And you manage to find time to be a landlord, right—isn’t there an American graduate student, Samantha Crowe, living in the flat above your garage?
Brody: “Who’s been talking to you? That’s none of your business.”

Ah, sorry, guess I was mistaken again. So are there people who show up on your doorstep a lot, wanting to search for King John’s lost crown jewels? I imagine there are a lot of people who’d consider that one of history’s biggest finds. Brody, pushing chair back: “I think this interview is over. You’re on a fishing expedition for information that has nothing to do with you. Leave me out of it.”

As Brody stomps out of the pub, the publican comes over with a new pint, and I ask if the local artist is always so touchy. “Artistic temperament,” he says, but I suspect there’s much, much more to Brody Parker’s story. If that’s even his real name…..

Deadly, Calm and Cold book coverFrom award-winning author Susannah Sandlin comes the second book in The Collectors series.

How far will ordinary people go to protect their secrets? The Collectors’ games are as much about manipulating lives as finding lost treasure. Everyone is expendable as the ruthless C7 pushes people into gambling with their lives in order to find priceless objects lost to history.

Samantha Crowe’s secrets could ruin her career, while Brody Parker’s could get him killed. They become pawns for two Collectors seeking Bad King John’s crown jewels, which disappeared in rural England back when Robin Hood roamed Nottingham.

This time, however, the Collectors–a ruthless dotcom billionaire and a desperate London detective–might not be playing for the same team, leaving Sam and Brody trapped in the middle.

One thing’s for sure: If either hope to survive, Sam and Brody will have to find a way to overcome their distrust–and their growing attraction–in order to succeed on this winner-take-all treasure hunt.

Excerpt

Samantha hadn’t intended to watch Brody Parker take a shower, only to peek in the window to see if he was in the bathroom so he could let her in the house.

But damn, that man was sexy. He was facing her, his head thrown back and eyes closed as the water cascaded over every ridge and muscle and . . . everything. She had to look, right? She might have taken a vow of celibacy but she hadn’t taken a vow of blindness.

You’re an absolutely pathetic loser, Sam’s inner nag said, and she agreed. Anyone who’d stand in the middle of a monsoon and ogle a man in his shower should have LOSER stamped on her forehead.

As soon as Brody stepped out of the water and saw her, his mouth and eyes battling for which could open the widest in shock, she stepped away from the window and splashed her way around the corner, returning to the back door. And yeah, giggled a little, the laughter bubbling up and spilling out before she could get it under control. She hadn’t laughed much in the last couple of days.

She’d never been quite so wet and cold in her life. The wind had picked up, stabbing horizontal blades of rain into her face as she waited at the back door. For a few seconds, she wondered if he might leave her out here, but then the door opened and he stood there with a white towel slung loosely around his hips, which would have been sexy as hell except for the black T-shirt he’d pulled on. Droplets of water dripped from his black wavy hair onto his shoulders, getting said T-shirt wet.

“Nice fashion statement.” She gave him her best lopsided smile as he moved aside to let her in. “You’re shy about going without a shirt? You have man boobs, don’t you?” Which would be a crime against nature.

“I certainly do not.” Looking offended, Brody pulled the T-shirt up, exposing a rock-hard set of damp abs and nice, firm pecs without a trace of man boob. He jerked the shirt back down before she started salivating, which was good, given her celibacy and all.

“Why were you leering in my bathroom window?” He cocked his head. “Are you stalking me? How long had you been watching?”

Not nearly long enough. “Just a few seconds. I knocked on the door earlier and you didn’t answer.”

He glanced out the door, where the rain almost obscured the garage. “Where’s your car?”

“Ah, that’s the real story. Do you have a fire lit?”

Brody closed the door, shutting out the hiss of rain hitting the slate courtyard. “Not yet. I was going to do it as soon as I showered. Give me a minute to get dressed.”

He made no attempt to leave, though, but instead treated her to a head-to-toe visual inspection that she could swear grew a little heated when his gaze landed on where her soaked, thin sweater clung to her breasts.

Her nipples perked up just to make sure he could see them, the traitors. They didn’t want her to be celibate. They wanted to be touched and licked and nibbled on, even if the attention came at the lips and tongue and teeth of the man who’d deliberately punctured her tire.

DESTINY

My urban fantasy romance, DESTINY, is one of the prizes. Here’s a romantic snippet starring club owner Carina and her undead love-interest, Alexander. In this scene, our lovebirds find themselves on different continents, sharing a sexy moment via video date… Enjoy!

We came watching each other pleasure ourselves. The thought sent more tremors tumbling through me. Alexander’s expression, the hungry heat in his eyes, told me he shared my satisfaction.

[…]

“So,” I began, unable to keep the satisfied grin off my face.

“So,” he echoed, licking his lower lip.

“That was fun.”

“Fun,” he parroted me again.

I straightened my spine and rolled my neck and shoulders, breathing deep to ground myself in a non-sexual reality. I hadn’t yet mentioned Dixon’s return or the unusual gift the evil bastard had sent me.

[…]

I opened my mouth to start the “Dixon is back” conversation and chickened out. “We should do that every night,” I blurted instead. “Come to think of it, why haven’t we? That was so much better than doing it alone.”

Heat crept over my cheeks. Had I just said that out loud?

[…]

He chuckled, a sexy rumble that twitched my insides. “I love it when you blush for me.”

“I don’t.” I covered my cheeks with my palms.

Two months of dating and our fated status as soul mates slash bonded vampire mates, and still he possessed the power to make me react like a giddy teenager. I loved and hated that blushing schoolgirl reaction, but he made every moment with him -—online or offline -— feel like that first exciting moment when our eyes met across a crowded room, or in our case, across a crowded hallway in a museum. Or like our first touch on the dance floor in my club. Electric. All-consuming. Inevitable.

I used to laugh at my psychic pal Faith whenever she’d talk of destiny and fate, then one look at Alexander and voilà -— game over.

Destiny by Celia Breslin book cover

In HAVEN, San Francisco nightclub owner Carina Tranquilli survives a vicious attack by her vampire family’s longtime archenemies. Several weeks later, as she struggles with PTSD and survivor’s guilt, supervillain Dixon resurfaces and kidnaps two of her best friends. To save them, Carina must comply with the evil bastard’s unusual demands. The kicker? She must tell no one what she is up to.

Meanwhile, she has a new dance club to open for the preternatural community, a fated soul mate acting secretive and distant, and a sexy, new, undead friend who’d love to take Alexander’s place in her heart and bed.

Blackmailed, betrayed, tempted…sometimes destiny has a wicked sense of humor.

Chat Halloween with Pippa Jay – All Hallow’s Eve Excerpt and Giveaway

Hi Everyone! My writer pal Pippa Jay visits today to chat about Halloween and to share her new release with us: All Hallow’s Eve. Be sure to read the fab excerpt and enter her giveaway, too. Details below. Enjoy!

The Inspiration Behind All Hallow’s Eve
By Pippa Jay

All Hallows’ Eve or All Saints’ Eve (now better known these days as Halloween) is a yearly celebration dedicated to remembering the dead. It was seen as a time when spirits and fairies were more likely to be abroad, and a time that the souls of the dead would come home. And that is what helped shape my story Hallow’s Eve. What would someone who had the power to summon back the dead do the one night a particular soul might be more tractable to summoning? Especially if that soul was the one person they couldn’t bear to live without. Once I had an idea for the title of my story, it was my research into the whole Halloween holiday and its mythology that gave me inspiration.

All Hallows’ Eve derives from the Old English ‘hallowed’ meaning holy, but is now contracted to the more familiar word of Hallowe’en. Most Halloween traditions are believed to have come from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in and meaning ‘end of summer’) but which was Christianised by the early Church. It was believed to be a celebration of the end of the harvest and a time of preparation for winter. Much like Christmas absorbing the celebration of the winter solstice, it’s believed that church missionaries chose to hold a festival at this time of year to smooth the native Pagan celebration into a Christian one to help with the conversion process. But there’s also the suggestion that it came into existence entirely independent of Samhain.

Whichever you believe, the modern day version of Halloween still carries the superstition of capricious sprites and spirits being active (and not necessarily just the little ones that dress up and visit homes with the threat of trick or treat, lol). And in my story, my hero is mindful that he may just as likely summon something malicious as he is the soul he’s searching for.

Do you like to celebrate Halloween? If so, how do you like to dress up if you do?

Hallow’s Eve Excerpt

The thud and chink of beer bottles and glasses on the bar announced Dan’s return.

“So?”

Hal shook his head. “Not tonight.”

“Oh, c’mon, man. Just one beer.”

Hal dropped his gaze to the glass he was still drying with a vehemence it didn’t deserve, avoiding his friend’s pleading stare. “Thanks, but I’m not in the mood.”

Dan made an exasperated sound. “Look, I know it’s nearly a year—”

Pain lanced into his chest. “Stop.” He looked up.

A frown creasing his tanned face, Dan glared back, but he shut up.

Hal sucked in a breath. He didn’t want to fight with Dan over this. The guy had stopped Hal’s life completely falling apart after last Halloween. “I know what you’re trying to do,” he murmured, and relief flickered in Dan’s brown eyes. “But I’m not ready to let it go.”

“I’m not saying you should, man. But how about getting back into some social interaction? You can’t spend the rest of your life as a recluse.”

“I won’t.” Hal smiled. Dan had no idea.

“Then come out for a beer.”

“Another time.”

“Tomorrow then. I know you’ve got the Halloween shift off.”

Hal put down the glass he’d abused. “I’m busy.”

“Oh, yeah? Doing what? Trick or treating?” Dan scoffed. “What is it with you and Halloween? You never struck me as religious enough to find it offensive, but you don’t go out and have any fun either. So how come you always take the night off?”

Hal looked around the bar at all the tawdry holiday decorations, and debated how to answer. Maybe Dan thought he was a closet Christian or something. The truth would shock the hell out of him. Especially with what Hal had planned this year. “My…family don’t see it as something to joke about.”

“Oh. Strict Catholic or something?”

“Something like that.” Hal smiled at the thought of his parents taking Holy Communion. But let Dan interpret it any way he liked.

About the Author, Amber Belldene

I grew up on the Florida panhandle, swimming with alligators, climbing oak trees and diving for scallops…when I could pull myself away from a book. As a child, I hid my Nancy Drew novels inside the church bulletin and read mysteries during sermons—an irony that is not lost on me when I preach these days.

I’m an Episcopal Priest with a bachelor’s degree in religious studies. I believe stories are the best way to explore human truths. Some people think it’s strange for a minister to write romance, but it is perfectly natural to me, because the human desire for love is at the heart of every romance novel and God made people with that desire. I write paranormal, historical and contemporary romance and live with my husband and two children in San Francisco.

My literary agent is the fabulous Becca Stumpf of the Prospect Agency.

Somewhere along the way a touch of romance crept into her work and refused to leave. In between torturing her plethora of characters, she spends the odd free moment playing guitar very badly, punishing herself with freestyle street dance, and studying the Dark Side of the Force. Although happily settled in the historical town of Colchester in the UK with her husband of 21 years and three little monsters, she continues to roam the rest of the Universe in her head.

New Release: HAVEN, an Urban Fantasy Romance – AUDIO FORMAT

I’m excited to share that Haven, the first book in The Tranquilli Bloodline series is now available in audio format, wahoo!

In keeping with our hop’s romantic theme, here’s a romantic snippet from HAVEN starring club owner Carina and her undead love-interest, Alexander. Enjoy!

Outside, the misty air cooled my lungs, the marble bench froze my ass, and the concrete under my bare feet chilled them bone deep. All cleared my head and eased the vertigo. “What time is it?”

Alexander draped his black leather coat over my shoulders. “Around four.”

He helped me snake my arms into the coat’s too-long-for-me sleeves, his hands pale like moonlight against the inky darkness of his coat. Such large, competent hands, the fingers long and strong. Piano player fingers. A silver band graced his left index, an onyx triquetra adorning the middle. He fished my hand from the sleeve. When our palms touched, power pulsed, warm and comforting.

My eyes strayed to the bracelets on his wrist. One thin strap of black leather and a chunky, metal bracelet of I-shaped links. I traced the metal with my free hand. “Silver?”

“Never.” He pointed at the rings. “White gold.” And the bracelet. “Titanium.”

“Oh.” My fingers continued their dance over his accessories. Love touching him.

Wind gusted around the clinic, whipping locks of hair across my face. He brushed them away, tucking some behind my ear. I pressed my cheek against his palm and closed my eyes to savor the moment. “Feeling better?”

I blinked and gave him a wry grin. “A lot better since you interrupted my undead uncles getting me drunk on brandy.”

His lips quirked, fangs flashing.

My insides quivered. “Yeah, much better.” My fingertips stroked his handsome face.

His skin showed no signs of the wounds he’d received during the earlier fight. Impressive. He leaned into my touch. My eyes zeroed in on his oh-so kissable lips. He moved closer, closer still, pausing a hair’s breadth away. My pulse skyrocketed. My stomach performed endless somersaults while bits lower clenched in anticipation. Do it. Do it now.

Alexander let out a breath and kissed me.

A feral sound erupted from my chest. Alexander growled against my lips and pulled me onto his lap so I straddled him. How perfectly I fit there.

Made for me.

Our kiss deepened, his tongue dancing with mine, exploring my mouth. I pushed my way into his. […]

Alexander groaned. He gripped my hips, grinding me against his hard length […] He was ready. […] I wanted him inside me. Now.

Energy radiated from us both, swirling like a gentle cyclone. Amazing. Just as our bodies fit together, so did our power. […]

A burst of pain speared my tongue and I stilled on his lap. I’d nicked myself on one of his fangs. Blood pooled in my mouth and I swallowed it, enjoying the iron flavor.

He pulled back. “Sorry.” A shadow passed through his blue eyes. I knew what he thought. Will she wake up and run now?

I lavished him with a reassuring smile. “It’s okay.”

His eyes brightened and he retracted his fangs, displaying smooth, even teeth. Wow, that is so hot. I squirmed on his lap, earning my hips a nice squeeze.
