We came watching each other pleasure ourselves. The thought sent more tremors tumbling through me. Alexanderās expression, the hungry heat in his eyes, told me he shared my satisfaction.

The Inspiration Behind All Hallow’s Eve

All Hallowsā Eve or All Saintsā Eve (now better known these days as Halloween) is a yearly celebration dedicated to remembering the dead. It was seen as a time when spirits and fairies were more likely to be abroad, and a time that the souls of the dead would come home. And that is what helped shape my story Hallowās Eve. What would someone who had the power to summon back the dead do the one night a particular soul might be more tractable to summoning? Especially if that soul was the one person they couldnāt bear to live without. Once I had an idea for the title of my story, it was my research into the whole Halloween holiday and its mythology that gave me inspiration.
All Hallowsā Eve derives from the Old English āhallowedā meaning holy, but is now contracted to the more familiar word of Halloweāen. Most Halloween traditions are believed to have come from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in and meaning āend of summerā) but which was Christianised by the early Church. It was believed to be a celebration of the end of the harvest and a time of preparation for winter. Much like Christmas absorbing the celebration of the winter solstice, itās believed that church missionaries chose to hold a festival at this time of year to smooth the native Pagan celebration into a Christian one to help with the conversion process. But thereās also the suggestion that it came into existence entirely independent of Samhain.
Whichever you believe, the modern day version of Halloween still carries the superstition of capricious sprites and spirits being active (and not necessarily just the little ones that dress up and visit homes with the threat of trick or treat, lol). And in my story, my hero is mindful that he may just as likely summon something malicious as he is the soul heās searching for.

Hallow’s Eve Excerpt
The thud and chink of beer bottles and glasses on the bar announced Danās return.
āSo?ā Hal shook his head. āNot tonight.ā āOh, cāmon, man. Just one beer.ā Hal dropped his gaze to the glass he was still drying with a vehemence it didnāt deserve, avoiding his friendās pleading stare. āThanks, but Iām not in the mood.ā Dan made an exasperated sound. āLook, I know itās nearly a yearāā Pain lanced into his chest. āStop.ā He looked up. A frown creasing his tanned face, Dan glared back, but he shut up. Hal sucked in a breath. He didnāt want to fight with Dan over this. The guy had stopped Halās life completely falling apart after last Halloween. āI know what youāre trying to do,ā he murmured, and relief flickered in Danās brown eyes. āBut Iām not ready to let it go.ā āIām not saying you should, man. But how about getting back into some social interaction? You canāt spend the rest of your life as a recluse.ā āI wonāt.ā Hal smiled. Dan had no idea. āThen come out for a beer.ā āAnother time.ā āTomorrow then. I know youāve got the Halloween shift off.ā Hal put down the glass heād abused. āIām busy.ā āOh, yeah? Doing what? Trick or treating?ā Dan scoffed. āWhat is it with you and Halloween? You never struck me as religious enough to find it offensive, but you donāt go out and have any fun either. So how come you always take the night off?ā Hal looked around the bar at all the tawdry holiday decorations, and debated how to answer. Maybe Dan thought he was a closet Christian or something. The truth would shock the hell out of him. Especially with what Hal had planned this year. āMy…family donāt see it as something to joke about.ā āOh. Strict Catholic or something?ā āSomething like that.ā Hal smiled at the thought of his parents taking Holy Communion. But let Dan interpret it any way he liked. |

About the Author, Amber Belldene
I grew up on the Florida panhandle, swimming with alligators, climbing oak trees and diving for scallopsā¦when I could pull myself away from a book. As a child, I hid my Nancy Drew novels inside the church bulletin and read mysteries during sermonsāan irony that is not lost on me when I preach these days.
Iām an Episcopal Priest with a bachelorās degree in religious studies. I believe stories are the best way to explore human truths. Some people think itās strange for a minister to write romance, but it is perfectly natural to me, because the human desire for love is at the heart of every romance novel and God made people with that desire. I write paranormal, historical and contemporary romance and live with my husband and two children in San Francisco.

Outside, the misty air cooled my lungs, the marble bench froze my ass, and the concrete under my bare feet chilled them bone deep. All cleared my head and eased the vertigo. āWhat time is it?ā
Alexander draped his black leather coat over my shoulders. āAround four.ā He helped me snake my arms into the coatās too-long-for-me sleeves, his hands pale like moonlight against the inky darkness of his coat. Such large, competent hands, the fingers long and strong. Piano player fingers. A silver band graced his left index, an onyx triquetra adorning the middle. He fished my hand from the sleeve. When our palms touched, power pulsed, warm and comforting. My eyes strayed to the bracelets on his wrist. One thin strap of black leather and a chunky, metal bracelet of I-shaped links. 10 Facts About Zombies You Might Not Know

When I first got interested in zombies, it was mostly through curiosity. I’ve got to admit I don’t much like the rampaging brain-eating monsters of Hollywood. *shudders* But I remembered reading different kinds of zombies in the books of Terry Pratchett and Piers Anthony. These didn’t eat brains, and those in Pratchett’s books were actually (mostly) intelligent people who wouldn’t even think about trying to bite people. So I wondered ā what is a zombie really? Well…
A zombie, according to Vodou religion and Haitian folklore, is an animated corpse raised by magical means.
A dead person can be revived by a bokor (a type of sorcerer not formally recognized by the Vodou religion).
Zombies have no will of their own, so remain under the control of the bokor.
If you feed a zombie salt, it will return to the grave. This is also considered a way to ‘save’ them.
George A. Romero’s film Night of the Living Dead is considered to be responsible for the modern myth that zombies are mindless monsters who feed on brains.
There’s an incorporeal version of a zombie, which is part of a human astral soul absorbed by a bokor to give them added spiritual strength.
The English word ‘zombie’ was first recorded in 1819.
The zombie phenomenon first gained international interest during the US occupation of Haiti (1915-1934).
In 1983 ethnobotanist Wade Davis proposed a purely pharmacological explanation for zombies, using puffer fish neurotoxin and a drug like datura.
The first appearance of a zombie in fiction is believed to be in the 1929 novel The Magic Island by William Seabrook.
